Autodesk has provided a list of their products that they have officially tested to run on Windows 8. It’s a short list but here it is:
- Autodesk 3ds Max 2013
- Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2013
- Autodesk Maya 2013
- Autodesk MotionBuilder 2013
- Autodesk Mudbox 2013
- Autodesk Softimage 2013
- Autodesk SketchBook Designer 2013
Autodesk confirms that these products in the list above have been tested and are currently working on Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. Autodesk will not confirm or provide support for products that are version 2009 or earlier. They no longer provide support for those releases anyway, so it’s understandable.
This is good news. If you are using these Autodesk products and want to (or have already) update to Windows 8 or are purchasing new machines with Windows 8 pre-installed, you will be fine. It doesn't mean that Autodesk products not on the list won’t work, it just means that Autodesk hasn't given it their blessing.
Autodesk also makes this statement, “Autodesk intends to support many of our key products on Windows 8 and will add additional products to the list of products supported on Windows 8 as updates and future versions are released. Product Support will provide its best effort to assist customers who have issues with products that are not currently supported.”
Rest assured that Autodesk will certify the product of theirs that you are using (as long as it’s newer than 2009). If the software doesn't work or has issues Autodesk is sure to release a patch, hotfix or service pack to get it working. Too many users will be in Windows 8 for them to ignore it. It just might take some time to get everything working.
